Shinrin Yoku in Japan becomes a daily habit without much hurdle for many people. This is true for a most Japanese and foreign residents alike. It is easily accessible thanks to the clever city planning that beautifully weaves nature, even forest, and well-paved walkways into the urban landscape. As a result, going for a Shinrin Yoku walk requires little planning, hence incorporating it into the daily life is convenient.
Having lived in Japan, I do not see Shinrin Yoku as an activity that one can do only in the forest. Though being in the forest, you will probably benefit more from the density of trees and the physical activity of climbing the altitude. In order to incorporate Shinrin Yoku into your daily routine, we need a simple shift in our mindset and an awareness.
For the most part, do not wait for that epic trip to the mountain. Like in Japan, everyone of us can practice Shinrin Yoku everyday and anywhere. By adopting a concept of treasuring the unrepeatable nature of a moment, Ichigo Ichie (一期一会), you learn to appreciate the nature around you like a Japanese.
