Journey Through Life With the Wisdom of the Forest
At 森の心・人の心, or Journey Through Life With the Wisdom of the Forest, resilience is a cornerstone of our practice. We recognize resilience as the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties, adapt to change, and keep going in the face of adversity. Our practices, particularly our Shinrin Yoku Guide and Instructor training, foster this trait, drawing from the principles of Shinrin Yoku, Kokoro, and Enso.
Shinrin Yoku, or forest bathing, naturally lends itself to cultivating resilience. As we immerse ourselves in the forest, we learn from its innate wisdom. Just as a tree bends under strong winds only to bounce back when the storm passes, or how the forest regrows after a fire, we too can cultivate this ability to weather life’s storms and grow stronger through our experiences. This practice teaches us to be present, to face our challenges, and to realize that we have the strength to overcome them.
The Japanese concept of Kokoro, embodying the heart, mind, and spirit, further deepens our understanding of resilience. It encourages us to look inward, to tap into our inner strength, and to maintain balance in the face of change or difficulty. Kokoro teaches us that our heart, mind, and spirit can work together to support us in difficult times, helping us bounce back and continue forward.
Finally, the principle of Enso, represented by a circle drawn in one or two uninhibited brushstrokes, symbolizes the beauty and strength of imperfection and impermanence. It reminds us that life is a continuous cycle of change and growth. The practice of creating an Enso helps us embrace the uncertainty of life and find our balance amidst change, fostering resilience.
During our Shinrin Yoku Guide and Instructor training, these concepts are woven into our teachings and practices. Our trainees learn not only the techniques of guiding others in Shinrin Yoku but also the deeper philosophical and spiritual principles that underpin the practice. We place emphasis on personal growth and self-understanding, providing tools and experiences that foster resilience.
As guides, the resilience developed during training helps them navigate the challenges that come with leading groups and individuals on their own journeys. As individuals, this resilience equips them to navigate their own paths, allowing them to weather life’s storms with grace and strength.
