Letters from the journey.

A yearly record of the research, questions, people, forests and experiences that have shaped The Mindful Tourist — from the first Shinrin-Yoku Guide Trainings toward a wider exploration of nature connectedness, mindfulness, meditation and human wellbeing.

2021–2026 Research & Reflection 森の心・人の心

More than news. A record of becoming.

The annual newsletter follows the development of The Mindful Tourist not simply as an organisation, but as an evolving exploration of our relationship with nature, ourselves and one another.

Each issue gathers some of the questions that accompanied our work during that particular year: what scientific research can tell us about time spent in nature, where the limits of that evidence lie, how Shinrin-Yoku changes when it moves between cultures, and what it means to guide another person without taking ownership of their experience.

The archive also records the gradual development of our educational work. What began primarily around Shinrin-Yoku and forest-based practice progressively expanded into a broader interdisciplinary space connecting nature connectedness, mindfulness, meditation, wellbeing, professional education and reflective practice.

These newsletters are therefore not simply yearly announcements. They offer a way of looking back at where the work stood at a particular moment: what we were exploring, what changed, what we learned and which questions remained open.

Six years of a changing journey.

Begin with the first newsletter in 2021 and follow the story chronologically, or enter the archive at the year that speaks most directly to where you are now.

We Are All Tourists Here

The beginning of the story. From deep time, evolution and human movement to the meaning behind the name The Mindful Tourist. This first newsletter introduces Milena, the early work with Shinrin-Yoku and the idea that recognising ourselves as temporary visitors may influence the way we relate to place, nature and one another.

Practice

Learning to Guide, Learning to Listen

A year centred on the developing role of the Shinrin-Yoku guide. The newsletter explores listening, attention, safety, reflective practice and the difference between directing an experience and creating conditions in which another person's own relationship with nature can unfold.

Returning to the Forest

The story returns more deeply to Japan. This issue explores Shinrin-Yoku not only as a forest practice, but within its environmental and cultural context. It reflects on seasonality, direct experience, place and the gradual movement from online learning toward embodied forest immersion.

Different Pathways, One Practice

Guide education becomes increasingly flexible while retaining a shared professional foundation. This issue reflects on the relationship between theory and practice and why becoming a guide involves considerably more than learning a fixed collection of forest activities or invitations.
