Journey Through Life With the Wisdom of the Forest
Kokoro – a Japanese term that embraces the concepts of mind, heart, and spirit – plays a central role in the understanding and practice of Shinrin Yoku, or forest bathing, and is an essential concept embodied in our logo, 森の心・人の心: Journey Through Life With the Wisdom of the Forest.
In the Japanese language, the term “Kokoro” is employed to express the intertwining of the heart, mind, and spirit. It embodies our feelings, thoughts, will, and consciousness. Kokoro is the cohesive force that shapes our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. It is often thought to reside at the intersection of our physical and spiritual realms, influencing our actions, decisions, and relationships.
In the practice of Shinrin Yoku, Kokoro becomes a profound tool for self-discovery and healing. Forest bathing is not just a walk in the woods; it’s an immersive experience that invites us to connect deeply with nature, slowing down to appreciate the myriad of details often missed in our hurried lives. The quiet contemplation offered by Shinrin Yoku aligns perfectly with the concept of Kokoro, as we turn inwards and tap into our innermost thoughts and feelings.
Our logo, 森の心・人の心, translates to “The heart of the forest, the heart of people,” which beautifully encapsulates the interconnectedness of human beings and nature. It denotes the mutual healing and nurturing relationship between humans and the forest. The practice of Shinrin Yoku is a celebration of this relationship. As we embrace the heart of the forest (森の心), we tune into the heart of ourselves (人の心), thus fostering a harmonious connection between the two.
Our logo also subtly evokes the Enso, a Zen symbol that represents enlightenment, the universe, and the void. It underscores the transitory and beautifully imperfect nature of existence. Just as the Enso symbolizes an enlightened understanding of life and the universe, Shinrin Yoku cultivates a profound understanding of our place within nature.
In essence, Kokoro is at the heart of Shinrin Yoku and our organization, 森の心・人の心 – Journey Through Life With the Wisdom of the Forest. As we journey through life, guided by the wisdom of the forest, we continuously align with our Kokoro – our heart, mind, and spirit – seeking balance, peace, and understanding. It is in these tranquil moments of alignment, when we are truly present in the forest, that we truly experience the deep, healing power of Shinrin Yoku.
