Journey Through Life With the Wisdom of the Forest
In October 2023, The Mindful Tourist: 森の心・人の心 organized the second edition of the Shinrin Yoku Guide Training, building on the success of the inaugural program in April. This transformative training continued to draw participants from around the world, reflecting the growing global interest in Shinrin Yoku. The October edition welcomed individuals from the United Arab Emirates, Austria, Russia, and the USA, creating a diverse and vibrant community of nature enthusiasts.
Training Curriculum:
The curriculum for the October 2023 edition of the Shinrin Yoku Guide Training followed a similar structure to the first edition, emphasizing the core principles and techniques of Shinrin Yoku. Participants embarked on a 10-week online journey, followed by a 5-day immersive experience in Japan. Here’s an overview of the curriculum:
Online Training Curriculum:
Week 1-5: Participants delved into the foundations of Shinrin Yoku, including its origins, philosophy, ethical guidelines, scientific underpinnings, and strategies for deepening the connection with nature. They also learned how to design and facilitate Shinrin Yoku sessions effectively.
Week 6-9: These weeks were dedicated to introspection and personal growth. Participants explored their own wellbeing, sensory experiences, values, and empathy, all while considering how these elements relate to their practice as Shinrin Yoku guides.
Week 10: The final online week focused on refining session design skills and preparing participants for the immersive experience in Japan.
Optional Module: Ikigai
As in the previous edition, participants had the option to explore their passions, motivations, and mission and vision in the Ikigai module. This module allowed them to gain a deeper understanding of their purpose in guiding Shinrin Yoku sessions.
Japan Immersive Experience:
The immersive experience in Japan offered participants the chance to connect with the birthplace of Shinrin Yoku and deepen their practice. Located in the beautiful city of Nara, the experience included:
Accommodation: Participants stayed at the serene Shinrin Yoku Association Center, surrounded by lush trees and natural beauty. They engaged in farm work, shared organic meals, and enjoyed heartfelt conversations.
Shinrin Yoku Practice: Participants conducted a minimum of four Shinrin Yoku practice sessions in the Japanese forest, providing them with hands-on experience and a deeper connection to the practice.
Training Components: The immersive training included classroom sessions, guided Shinrin Yoku sessions in nature, nature immersion activities, instructional techniques, group discussions, cultural and historical insights, networking opportunities, and mentorship.
Certification: Upon successful completion of the training, participants received certification as Accredited Shinrin Yoku Guides through SYA, solidifying their ability to guide others through the transformative practice of forest bathing.
Welcoming Participants from Around the World:
The October 2023 edition of the training continued to foster a sense of global community. Participants hailed from diverse countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Austria, Russia, and the USA. This international mix enriched the training experience, allowing participants to share insights and perspectives from their respective cultures.
As with the first edition, the training aimed to provide a comprehensive and immersive experience that combined theoretical and practical components. Participants left with a deepened connection to nature, a profound understanding of Shinrin Yoku, and the skills and certification necessary to guide others on their own Shinrin Yoku journeys. The success of this program reinforced the global appeal and importance of the practice in promoting wellness and mindfulness.
